Jess Phillips has resigned from Keir Starmer’s government, becoming the second minister to walk out in a day after Miatta Fahnbulleh quit and urged the Prime Minister to set a timetable for departure.
The revolt follows Labour’s local election battering, with more than 80 MPs now calling for Starmer to go, close to the threshold needed to trigger a leadership contest.
Starmer told Cabinet he will not resign unless formally challenged, insisting Britain needs stability and that government must continue. But with ministers openly discussing an “orderly transition”, Labour’s civil war is now at the gates of Downing Street today.
