Italy Sends In Army After Riots as Nationwide Strikes Bring Fresh Disruption

Fresh nationwide strikes and demonstrations swept Italy on Friday, October 30, following weeks of riots that prompted the government to announce 500 troops for Milan.

Crowds gathered in Rome and other cities over living costs and military spending, with communist and Palestinian flags visible in the capital.

Earlier unrest saw masked rioters loot shops and throw projectiles at police, while protesters stormed the Colosseum last Saturday.

Farmers and truckers have also blocked highways and ports in southern Italy.

Meloni’s government has introduced tougher penalties for rioters, including making parents financially responsible when their children take part in vandalism and looting.
